Nova Reed used to have dreams-of becoming a famous drummer, of marrying her true love. But all of that was taken away in an instant. Now she's getting by as best she can, though sometimes that means doing things the old Nova would never do. Things that are slowly eating away at her spirit. Every day blends into the next . . . until she meets Quinton Carter. His intense, honey brown eyes instantly draw her in, and he looks just about as broken as she feels inside.
Quinton once got a second chance at life-but he doesn't want it. The tattoos on his chest are a constant reminder of what he's done, what he's lost. He's sworn to never allow happiness into his life . . . but then beautiful, sweet Nova makes him smile. He knows he's too damaged to get close to her, yet she's the only one who can make him feel alive again. Quinton will have to decide: does he deserve to start over? Or should he pay for his past forever?

Breaking Nova is my first read by Jessica Sorensen and to be honest I really had a hard time connecting with Nova and Quinton. I set this novel down many times as I could not get into the writing style. Breaking Nova starts out flat for me as almost every paragraph starts with "I, I'm, We, She, Her, He, His" etc.

It starts off in the prologue with both Nova and Quinton incidents that made them the way they are today. They are both Broken, Confused and Lost characters. About 40% into Breaking Nova is when I finally started to feel a little connection with them. That is when the flashbacks start happening and readers get to visualize what really happened. The flashbacks are well written and wish the story was written in that way, more visual and with depth. Quinton uses drugs as an escape from his incident. After reading his first flashback who could blame him for turning to drugs as an out. It was painful and my heart broke for him.
Now for Nova one thing I wanted so badly was for her to click on that "file" she has saved from her incident. Do not want to give any spoilers but if you read Breaking Nova then you will understand what I am talking about. That "File" broke my heart.
Breaking Nova is a dark novel dealing with the affects of tragedy. It is not faint for the heart or a HEA read. I have a few of my downs with the novel but I loved the direction it was going towards the end. Book 2 is for sure on my To-Buy-list come February.

By this author, I read The story of Ella and Micha and it was... ok, that's all. I had trouble connecting with the characters too, I finished the book but I wasn't carried away ;) Thanks for the review !
ReplyDeleteI was not carried away by Breaking Nova. I was hoping of some twist and turns that would wow me but never got any of that. As of now I do not think I will try any of her other series. I will read book 2 of this series as I want to know what direction the characters are heading. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteGreat review! This book is probably my least favorite of hers. I did enjoy it but it was awfully depressing. I actually had to put it down a few times myself as well. It just has such a somber tone but I do love Jessica's other books.
ReplyDeleteChelsea I notice on some reviews from her fans this series is different than her others and some did not like it as much either. Then some have loved it. Yes awfully depressing. It is truly a novel about 2 people dealing with the affects of tragedy. I love dark novels but needed some twist and turns to wow me.
DeleteGreat review. Thanks for not giving away any spoilers. I have yet to read this one.
ReplyDeleteMarilyn @ Marilyn's Mystery Blog
Marilyn your welcome for a spoil free review. I did not want to give anything away. Not even what the incidents were that left the hero and heroine broken, lost and confused. Breaking Nova is one of those reads that are best for readers going into it not knowing. Look forward to your thoughts when you do get around to reading it.
DeleteFelicia this was my first read by her and do not regret it. I love dark novels.
ReplyDeleteGreat review!! I actually quite enjoyed this one, and it broke my heart. I felt so sorry for Nova. And that file... I agree. OMG!!
ReplyDeleteNaomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace
Naomi that is awesome you enjoyed Breaking Nova. I did feel sorry for Nova and started to really feel for her later on in the novel. Very young to have to experience such tragedy. I liked it enough to see what direction the characters are going into book 2.
DeleteAw I actually LOVED this one, it seriously broke my heart. I cannot wait for the next one in the series im dying for it. Im a total JS fangirl tho and I really dont like NA all that much.

Amanda I feel like I am the only one that was not blown away by this novel. Breaking Nova did not make me a fangirl of JS but I have still yet to try any of her other series. That is awesome your are not into NA all that much and enjoy JS novels. I have read many books that the first in the series did not wow me, just liked it but ended up loving book 2 etc. I do look forward to book 2 as to what my thoughts are going to be.
DeleteAw bummer it didn't quite work for you. I have another one of hers on my tbr review pile that I really must get to soon. Love that the flashbacks were good. That's really hard to find.
ReplyDeleteFunny how that works sometimes as flashbacks do not work well in novels and in this I loved them the most and truly broke my heart.
