Review: Unbeloved by Madeline Sheehan

I reviewed this back in 2015 on goodreads but for some reason could not find on my blog. I have no idea what happened to it or if I never got around to posting here.

Update: LOL just found my review it was in drafts. Silly me never posted here but did on Goodreads. What was I thinking I usually post first here then Goodreads.

Dorothy Kelley is a born romantic, searching for her prince. Instead she finds herself pregnant at fifteen, and in a loveless marriage by the tender age of eighteen.

Then hope comes riding into her life on a motorcycle and within weeks, Jason “Jase” Brady, a member of the Hell’s Horsemen Motorcycle Club, sweeps Dorothy off her feet.

But nothing is ever simple for Dorothy. Jase is married with children. And as Dorothy patiently waits for Jase to give her the happily-ever-after she’s been dreaming about, James “Hawk” Young, a member of the Hell’s Horsemen with secrets of his own, sees an opening into Dorothy’s life and takes it.

Carrying on two secret affairs is no easy feat. As Dorothy tries to dig herself out of the mess she’s created, covering one mistake with another, tragedy strikes, nearly costing Dorothy her life and that of her unborn son.

What follows is a long and painful journey of self-discovery and forgiveness, as Dorothy comes to realize that home was exactly where she’d left it, and the love she’d forever craved had always been within her reach.

This is the story of Dorothy, Jase, and Hawk.

We are all born pure; it is our journey that burdens us and leads us astray. Our mistakes that beat us down and cover us in guilt and shame, burying us a little more with each passing hardship. It is up to us to dig ourselves out, to come to terms with our faults, to embrace not only our imperfections but those of the ones we love, and to once again find the path we strayed from.

Warning: This is not a conventional or predictable love story. It involves one woman and two men bound by a love so destructive it spans two decades, pitting brother against brother, and shattering the lives of those touched by it.

Thoughts: I was looking forward to how Dorothy, Jase, and Hawk story played out especially after Unattainable (Undeniable #3). Sad to say I wanted more from their story. Started out strong, middle a tad boring and ended amazing.

Unbeloved is not only Dorothy's journey in finding forgiveness and self-discovery. It is also about the outcome of Hawke and Jase actions and leading to redemption. Now her journey did bore me at times. I really wanted to feel for her as she had to go through many hard obstacles to find her man. Hawke I loved his backstory as it was interesting and plays a big roll in the story.

I was thankful for the flashbacks with Dorothy, Jase and Hawke's relationship. But I really needed more. I felt their story was being told to me and not enough showing. I had no problems with their story being in the present, I really needed more shown on their past to really get the connection with each other. I wanted to see the jealousy, the sneaking around and the heartaches. Their story lacked angst and for all that they have been through it really should of been there. I wanted more Hawke and Jase at each others throat especially since they were in love with the same woman.

I was a little surprised that Preacher story is next and not ZZ. Was a little bummed readers are getting his story first but I get it now. I really wanted his scene played out and not told. I definitely want his book now in Undeserving (Undeniable #5).

Unbeloved was missing the raw, gritty, dark, emotional feel readers have come to love in the Undeniable series. It is tame, less steamy and I was fine with that. I loved that it was different than the other novels. At times a series can get old when it has the same formula and feel to it. I have stopped reading series because of the this. Some times raw, dark and gritty does not fit the characters or the story and in this case it would of not worked. But the emotional roller coaster should of been there and it was not.

ZZ alone gets a 5 star. Loved that I am only getting teasers of him. Once again I am screaming at my kindle "No.. ZZ what have you done!". Can not believe Madeline Sheehan went there. It is twisted and I love it. Once again Madeline Sheehan is brilliant. If you are a fan of ZZ and read all his fucked up actions well lovelies this has got to be the worst of them yet. His jaw dropping moment stayed with me for days. Shit's about to get real and I hope it is coming Madeline Sheehan style. Raw, gritty, dark and all kinds of fucked up.

  1. No screaming at your kindle. I am glad like this one. I am sorry it wasn't a 4 like the others. I am hoping you get ZZ's story next. Great review. I haven't been reading as much as I should. I am spending to much time with homework and tests.
