Hello. Decided to combine How We Lived with Lusting For Covers, Quote-Tastic and my review.
Synopsis By Goodreads
A new adult novel from Entangled's Embrace imprint... The secrets he's keeping from that night could destroy everything again...
Nineteen-year-old Kelsey Larkin's parents uninvited her to her brother's funeral. She just wanted to wear jeans and a T-shirt--the clothes Kyle would've wanted her in--not wrap herself up in death. So she watched the funeral from afar, like an outsider. Which is just how she feels.
Chase came, though, just like she knew he would. Until a few months ago, the three of them had been best friends, and then Chase made a mistake that shattered both families. But when Kelsey looks at him, she doesn't see her brother's killer. She sees the boy next door who's always taken care of her. She sees home.
When Chase tells her his feelings run deeper than friendship, she can't help but get lost in him. In Chase, she finally has the closure she's been unable to find anywhere else. But the boy she's falling in love with is still hiding secrets about the night Kyle died. Secrets that could destroy everything they have...again

I did not love or hate How We Lived. The authors voice was good and everything flowed nicely with the plot. Which I loved the plot idea. The main issue I had was a lot of telling and not enough showing. I really needed to feel Kelsey, Kyle and Chase relationship before Kyle died.
I guess it is my fault after reading the blurb I had expectations of a tear-jerker read. That is not what I got. Once again this is because of telling and not showing. I did have a few moments that did break my heart a little. Wish those few heart breaking moments were through out the book. I loved Chase mom. She is supported of her son and always has his back.

Poem on heroines brother gravestone. Sad and beautiful.
If tears could build a stairway,
and memories a lane,
I would walk right up to Heaven
and bring you back again.

Thoughts:
Love the cover for How We Lived. Love the teaser of the heroes sexy five o'clock shadow. Love the black and white cover mix with just the blue one word font. It was the cover that got me to check out the blurb.
It does sound like it would have some intense stuff so I'd expect some emotions, too. Interesting story line. I do love a mystery with my romance.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness it was not just me reading too much into the blurb.
DeleteJaw and scruff get me every time, too!
ReplyDeleteIt is one of my weakness.
Deleteoh it can be so disappointing when you expect a good emotional read and don't get it. I like a story that connects with the reader emotionally.
ReplyDeleteI need to feel what the characters are feeling.
DeleteActually, I read what you read in the blurb (twice, just to be sure), which means I would have expected to grab some tissues. The poem on the gravestone is beautiful and quite touching . . . Thanks for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteThank you you are the second person to agree with me. I was so wanting a tearjerker read.
DeleteThat blurb does sound like this would be quite the angsty read. I think these kinds of reads are the worst - the ones that aren't good or bad. I at least want ta book to move me, even if moves me towards being infuriating!
ReplyDeleteNice review.
So happy you agree also with the blurb. It is so hard to write a review for books that are not good or bad.
DeleteOh yes that is both sweet and sad.
ReplyDeleteTelling not showing is so hard.
I know and really can ruin what could be a good book
DeleteYeah, I love the "showing" too, so I can understand why this annoys you.
ReplyDeleteI have to having showing in my reads.
