Twenty years ago shape shifters and announced themselves to the world only to be shunted into “Shiftertowns” and forced to wear collars that control their hunting and fighting instincts (referred to as “Taking the Collar”).

Liam Morrissey, big cat-Shifter, is currently liaison between the Shifters of Austin, TX, and the humans of the city. Kim Fraser, attorney, finds herself in the unique position of having to defend a Shifter on a murder charge.

Kim ventures to Shiftertown to seek Liam’s help and stumbles across too many secrets that the Shifters want kept secret. The unmated Liam is forced to protect Kim against the wrath of his clan leader and his own father, and to his surprise discovers a powerful attraction to the sassy, sexy lady.

I had the pleasure of reading Pride Mates with TBQ’s Book Palace for our Shifter-A-Thon-Read-A-Long group on goodreads.

I had Pride Mates (Shifters Unbound #1) on my nook for some time now. I can not believe it took me so long to read it. Pride Mates was an enjoyable read with likable characters that are shifters, living in our world but not really accepted. They have there own town known as Shiftertown.

Now Liam the hero who I adored had a laid back personality. Life is what is and no use in dwelling on the bad. I thought he was a swoon worthy hero as he accepted the Collar to lead a better life for his family. Even though their lives are constricted with having to work at low paid jobs, not being accepted by humans but at least they can have a somewhat normal life. As before their inner animal took over. Would kill because they were hungry, kill because they felt threatened. At least with the Collar they are controlled. He has always been a protector, it is in his heart. When it comes to Kim it is only natural he would have a alpha male attitude. I loved how his alpha attitude is not over the top in your face. It fit his laid back personality perfect. Loved he had a sense of humor.

“Liam, I cannot bring a shifter to work with me.”

Liam lifted his sunglasses, blue eyes dancing. “I don’t see any signs: ‘No Shifters Allowed.’ ’Shifters Must Keep Off the Grass.’ ’Absolutely No Territory Marking Anywhere.’”

He for sure had his smart ass moments.

K: “How can you just sit there?”

L: “I usually sit when I’m drinking coffee. Or I lean against something. If I lie on my back, it goes down the wrong way.”

Kim was a perfect match for Liam’s smartass alpha male attitude. She has no problem going head to head with him and letting him know when he was a pushy pain in her ass. Kim has a smart mouth on her too that is not over the top. I thought it fit perfect with her Lawyer character. She does not back down from anything and anyone. Her smart mouth is one of the traits Liam loves about her but then again in certain situations he really wish she learn to bite her tongue. She does not care if you are a scary badass higher ranking shifter, do not annoy her.

“I said, come here.”

Kim lifted her chin. “Do the words ‘screw you’ mean anything to you?

Loved how they are from different worlds and had to learn each others ways. She is not use to having to be touched all the time and shifters live to be touched not in a sexual way. It was the little things that got my heart pounding, like when Liam would out of the blues start massaging her feet, curling his finger around her hair etc. Their relationship is bit different then others since he had to mate with her in order to protect her. So in his world they are mated for life. They become mates, then this leads to friendship that later turn into love. Loved the love scenes and were well written but more on the hot side. Liam can call me Love any day.

I look forward to continuing the Shifters Unbound series. Love to see how things are going to play out in Shiftertown. Curious about the secondary characters Sean, Connor, Silas and Ellison.
